Paris Olympics 2024

Fri, 26 Jul, 2024 – Sun, 11 Aug, 2024 | Olympic Games | Paris, France

The Paris Olympics 2024 Games will begin on July 26, with the opening ceremony scheduled at 7:30 pm local time (11:30 pm IST). According to the organizers, there are parades planned along the banks of River Seine, along with cultural presentations around major landmarks of the French capital.

         Event Overview

In keeping with the slogan for this year’s Olympics, “Games Wide Open,” the opening ceremony will take place outside a stadium setting for the first time. The plans are ambitious: a 3.5-mile boat parade along the Seine before as many as 325,000 onlookers on the river’s banks. The hundreds of athletic events — hosted by dozens of venues across Paris and other cities in metropolitan France — will likewise be open to large crowds. Start the countdown clock. In exactly 100 days, more than 10,000 athletes and tens of thousands of spectators will converge on Paris for the start of the 33rd Summer Olympic Games, a 16-day extravaganza that marks the first time the City of Lights has hosted the world’s pre-eminent sports festival in a century.

The Paris Games promise to be one of the most elaborate cultural rituals since Covid swept across the world beginning in late 2019. Health restrictions forced the organizers of Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 to sharply limit the scale of the festivities, with events largely closed to the public. Paris 2024, powered in part by pent-up demand for communal experiences, symbolizes an international post-pandemic vibe shift. The Summer Olympics are returning to Paris after 100 years. The last time the French capital hosted the international competition was in 1924, when there were 22 sports. This time, there will be 32, including one that’s making its Olympics debut.

Also, for the first time in Summer Games’ history, the Olympics Opening Ceremony won’t be held in a stadium. Instead, organizers are planning to parade a flotilla of boats down the Seine that runs through the heart of the city.

Here’s everything you need to know to be ready for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

  • When is the Paris 2024 Olympics?

The Opening Ceremony of what is officially the XXXIII Olympiad is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. ET on July 26—though soccer and rugby sevens events kick off on July 24. The closing ceremony takes place on Aug. 11.

  • What are the sporting events?

This summer, 10,500 athletes from over 200 national committees as well as a refugee team will compete in 329 events. The Paris Olympics will include 28 returning sports, following the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics (which took place in 2021 due to COVID-19), as well as four special additions: sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing, and breaking—the last of which is making its Olympics debut. The International Olympic Committee accepted Paris 2024 organizers proposal to include these additional sports because they “contribute to making the program of the Olympic Games more gender balanced, more youthful and more urban.”
