Babulnath Mandir In Mumbai
Mumbai, India's Babulnath Mandir in Mumbai is a historic Shiva shrine. One of the city's oldest mandirs, Shiva is the primary deity here, taking the form of the Lord of the Babul tree. The temple is perched on a little hillock close to Girgaum Chowpatty. The devout ascended to the temple to receive Darshan from the Shivling and the Lord's blessings. An elevator can also be used to ascend to the temple. On the yearly Mahashivratri festival, lakhs of devotees flock to the temples.
History Babulnath Mandir in Mumbai
The Parsi community owned the land when the first temple was constructed. There were five Dakhmas (the last resting places for Parsis) in the area. The construction of the temple was met with strong opposition at the time from the Parsi community. This opposition persisted until late 1800 when the courts resolved the matter in the temple's favor.
Old Temple
When the Babulnath Mandir in Mumbai was initially constructed, Hindu merchants were among the patrons. With contributions from the Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad of the state of Baroda, a larger temple was constructed in 1890. The present temple's construction dates from 1890. When the temple was constructed in 1890, it stood tall, but due to damage to the spire and a lightning strike in the 1960s, its current height has been significantly reduced. Babulnath Mandir was one of Mumbai's tallest buildings and locations up until the 1980s.
Because yogis used to frequent Babulnath Mandir in Mumbai in the early days for "Dhyan" (Quiet and concentrated Meditation) and to stay quietly in the vicinity/radius of the Shivling's vibrations, there is very little mention of the temple in historical texts. But in the twentieth century, the temple gained notoriety. Currently, Mondays and the months of Mahashivratri and Shravan are when the temple is most crowded with visitors.
Legend of Babulnath Mandir
Babulnath Mandir, Mumbai
According to legend, a wealthy goldsmith named Pandurang owned the southeast section of the hilly region known as Malabar Hill, which is home to Lord Babulnath's ancient temple, for approximately 200 years. His cattle were lying about to graze.
Since it was grazing land, Babul, Pandurang's cattle stockkeeper, had nothing to tend to.
When a cow named Kapila was observed to be giving up milk, she stopped. Upon inquiry, Babul revealed that the cow herself reaches a certain point and suo-moto expresses all of her milk before returning home. Babul had made Pandurang curious, but he was unable to explain the reasoning behind this.
When Panduranga saw the same scene again the following day, he was overcome with emotion when he saw that Kapila, the cow, was performing her routine. When they arrived, they discovered a massive Shivaling. That is the exact location where the temple was constructed.
