It is full of symbolism
It is full of symbolism
Indian values abound in the temple. A good example is the Ten Gates of Construction, representing the ten cardinal directions and the Vedic ideal of summoning happiness and peace from everywhere.
One of the gates, the Bhakti Dwar Gate of Devotion, enshrines the tradition of dual worship worship of both the god and his closest disciple. This symbolism is complemented by more than 200 statues depicting this dual worship.
As the Akshardham Temple is dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, his symbolism also lives here. He is considered the torch bearer of Indian culture and his footprints are laid across the temple in white marble. These footprints bear 16 sacred signs that signify the holiness of the deity. It's like I feel a spiritual calm settle in as I walk through.

Ten gates
These beautifully intricate gates symbolize the ten cardinal directions present in Indian culture. It also talks about bringing peace and happiness.
Bhakti Dwar
Another defining factor inside the complex is the Bhakti Dwar. It is adorned with 208 carved dual images of God and his followers. The gate is stunning. The amount of work and creativity that went into it is truly genius.
Mayur Dwar
Another beautiful structure you will come across is Mayur Dwar. Dedicated to India's national bird, the peacock, this door has a life of its own. It is full of color and purity and you can feel all 869 carved peacocks come to life when you approach it. I was really in awe when I came across this and couldn't take my eyes off it.
Tracks
Collecting my brochures about Akshardham Mandir, I was escorted to the famous Charnarvind or Holy Footsteps. The footprints are of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and are carved out of white marbles. The footprints made me feel so blessed to walk through the temple where Bhagwan Swaminarayan once resided. It was a truly ethereal feeling.
The entire complex itself has 234 carved columns, 9 magnificent domes and more than 20,000 sculptural figures, all of which are so beautiful they belong in an art museum. I was finally beginning to understand how exciting this temple was.
