Dudhwa Tiger Reserve

          Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is located in the Lakhimpur-Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. The area was heavily covered in long grasses, which made it simpler for the tigers to hide. The Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary, Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, and Dudhwa National Park make up the Tiger Reserve.

            The park, which covers an area of 811 square kilometers and attracts nature enthusiasts with its marshes, grasslands, and dense forests, is intended for huge populations of tigers and swamp deer. It spreads across 1,284.3 km2. The Tiger Reserve includes fragments of three large forests. This Tiger Reserve is the park where Billy Arjan Singh successfully weaned the tiger cub, Tara, and successfully helped her to get accustomed to the beautiful life in the wild sanctuary.

           It was given the title of a wildlife sanctuary in 1965. After that, in 1977, it was elevated to become a national park. In the late 1980s, Dudhwa joined a Project Tiger reserve. The Dudhwa Tiger Reserve’s sal forest section and its damp grass plains are well decorated.

           The National Tiger Conservation Authority oversees Project Tiger, which is in charge of 54 Indian tiger reserves.

History of  Tiger Reserve:-

           The Dudhwa jungle experienced significant expansion during the post-independence century. Seven rhinos were brought to Dudhwa in 1984–1985 from Assam and Nepal to restore a population that had previously existed there 150 years earlier. Four years later, it was designated a Tiger Reserve as part of Project Tiger and is today a significant tiger habitat in India.

           It was given the title of a wildlife sanctuary in 1965. After that, in 1977, it was elevated to become a national park. In late 1980, Dudhwa joined Project Tiger Reserve. This Tiger Reserve’s sal forest section and its damp grass plains are well decorated. 

Flora and Fauna of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve:-

  • Along with tigers, the other animals that call the Dudhwa Reserve home include leopards, elephants, bears, rhinoceros, barasinghas, swamp deer, spotted deer, sloth bears, and jackals.
  • Amphibians like Indian-headed softshell turtles are also found in Dudhwa.
  • The spot-billed pelican, Sarus Crane, Red Jungle Fowl, Large Cormorant, India Long-billed Vulture, and Brown Hawk Owl are a few of the migratory and native species of Dudhwa Reserve.
  • This Tiger Reserve is home to pythons, king cobras, monitor lizards, & gharial among other reptile species.
  • These woodlands’ fundamental plant life is made up of sal, shisham, bahera, asna, jamun, sehore, and gular.
  • In the Dudhwa Reserve, some trees are more than 150 years old and more than 70 feet tall.

  • There are three regions in the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve: the core, the buffer, and the corridor.
  • The South Kheri, North Kheri, and Shahjahanpur forests are a part of the buffer.
  • This Tiger Reserve represents the Terai ecosystem.
 

Dudhwa Forest Safari :-

Many services have moved online as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic and can now book a ticket both online and offline.

  • Daily jeep safaris in open 4WD safari vehicles are scheduled from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. 
  • The Dudhwa National Park is open from 15 November to 15 June each year. November through June is the ideal time to visit the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve.
  • The area receives major rainfall during June, July, and August every year and thus the park is closed by the Forest Department.
