Kapaleeswarar Temple in Chennai According to popular belief, the Pallava dynasty built the Kapaleeshwarar temple, which was later rebuilt in the 16th century.
It is believed that Portuguese explorers visited Chennai between these two time periods and demolished the temple. Later, the Vijayanagar kings and the Tuluva Dynasty were instrumental in rebuilding the Kapaleeshwarar temple.Â

The temple was originally built in Dravidian style, but after it was demolished, the Vijayanagara style was combined during reconstruction. Inside the temple, 12th-century inscriptions serve as proof of its historical significance. You will also come across several shrines, colossal gates, and a pet peacock peahen.
