DakshinaChitra, which translates to "a picture of the south," is a living history museum in Chennai. More than 4000 artifacts are displayed in 18 houses that depict the culture, architecture, craft, and lifestyle of all four South Indian states: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, and Karnataka.
DakshinaChitra is an exciting cross-cultural living museum of South Indian art, architecture, lifestyles, crafts, and performing arts. The Museum is located at Muttukadu, 25 kilometers south of Central Chennai on the East Coast Road to Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, India, overlooking the Bay of Bengal.
DakshinaChitra has a collection of 18 authentic historical houses, each with a contextual exhibition.All of the houses purchased and rebuilt at DakshinaChitra had been designated for demolition by their owners. The authentic homes in a regional vernacular style are purchased, dismantled, transported, and rebuilt by artisans (Stapathis) from the regions where the houses originated.
