About Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve
Keeping in view favorable conditions for tiger habitat, Forest and Environment Government of India vide its letter No. 3-1/2003 P.T. 851.09 sq km of Udanti and Sitanadi Reserves dated 05.08.2006.
Core zone and 991.45 sq km buffer zone, total 1842.54 sq km. After in-principle approval on bringing forest area under Project Tiger, Ch. Udanti Sitandi Tiger Reserve Gariaband has been constituted vide Government Notification No.
– F 8-43/2007/10-02, Raipur dated 20.02.2009. Udanti–Sitandi Tiger Reserve is named after the rivers Udanti and Sitanadi which flow through the Udanti Reserve and Sitanadi Reserve.
Udanti Sitandi Tiger Reserve mainly consists of sal, mixed forest and bamboo forest on hilly areas. Apart from this, there are natural forests of teak in some areas, mainly Bija, Shisham, Tinsa, Saj, Khamhar, Haldu, Mudi, Kullu, Karra, Senha, Amaltas etc.
The Tiger Reserve is rich in various types of medicinal plants and the area of the Tiger Reserve is rich in biodiversity.
Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve Gariaband district is one of the nine new districts formed in Chhattisgarh, which became operational from 1 January 2012. Gariband district was carved out of Raipur district and its headquarters is in Gariband town.
\ Dhamtari and Mahasamund are neighboring districts. The area of the district is 5822.861 sq. km. It is full of natural resources.
The area of ”Gariband Forest” is 1951.861 sq km and “Udanti Sita River Tiger Reserve” is 983.94 sq km. The poverty-stricken district begins with the ancient temples of Rajim.
Figenswar Development Group being a flat region is well equipped with irrigation and modern farming practices. Chura block has created famous tourist spots like “Jatamayi” and “Ghatrani”.
Baruka Aniket, Tonhidabari, Ramaipot along with Rasela near Malaygiri mountain on Orissa border is a forest and flat area.
History of Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve
The Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary was set up in 1974 under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. It covers a huge 556 km2 area and is located at an altitude of 327 to 736 m above sea level.
It’s named after the Sitanadi River, which flows from the sanctuary and joins the Mahanadi River at Deokhut.
History of the district
During the British period, Garibiband was a part of Tehsil. Initially Gariaband district was called Bindranawagarh tehsil. Aimed to expand public access to administrative facilities, splitted into sub-tehsils Fingeshwar, Chhura, Deobhog and Mainpur respectively.
Some documents of Bindranwagarh are not available enough so according to some evidence it is an administrative region of tribals and zamindars.
Bindranawagarh and Gariaband were the main administrative area. In 1901, the Gond tribal kings shifted their capital to Chura.
Archeology of the district
The beginning of the Gariaband district starts from ancient temples of Rajim. In the district the chief religious, historical and at the confluence of Mahanadi, Parry and Sodhur “Rajim” is important ancient town.
The temple is famous for beautiful Vishnu temple. The Kuleshwar temple also has a worship room and a mandap. The temples cell open towards the porch which is a narrow room, standing pillars are lined in two rows.
The temple was built in the 14th or 15th century. Group of several temples in the city in which Rajiv Lochan Temple is one that. The prestigious main statues queness quadrilateral is Vishnu, which has all the usual signs.
The temple has two inscriptions of different periods on one wall, one of which may be from the 8th or 9th century. Rajiv Lochan Temple is surrounded by seven sacred shrines.
It is relatively modern.Rajiv Lochan Temple is 18 meters long and 8 meters wide and 2.5 meters high. The mandap of the temple is 12 meters long and 5 meters wide.
Apart from that there are Rajeshwar Temple, Daneshwar Temple, Jagannath Temple and Ram Temple.

Limitless possibilities of tourism in the Gaiaband district. Various natural and picturesque places as well as archeological religious and historical also places of attraction.
The famous religious town of Rajim is famous by the names of “Kuleshwar”, “Triveni Sangam” and “Rajiv Lochan Mandir”.
“Ghatrani” and “Jatmai Mata Mandir” situated in the lap of nature are popular centers of the district in terms of tourism.
There are “Bhuteswarnath”, “Ramaipot”, “Kachana Dhruva” and small natural springs.
Best Places – Jatmayi, Ghatarani, Bhathigarh, Bhooteshwarnath, Kandadongar, Tengnahi Dongar, Ramaipot, Sohlipot, Garjayi Mata, Rajiv Lochan Temple, Kuleshwarnath, Kachana Dhurwa.
