Savitribai Phule Punyatithi

Savitribai Phule Punyatithi is observed annually on the death anniversary of Savitribai Phule, one of India’s pioneering social reformers and educators. She passed away on 10th March 1897, and her Punyatithi (death anniversary) is celebrated to honor her legacy of social justice, women’s rights, and education. The day is marked with various events, including discussions, seminars, processions, and prayers, particularly in Maharashtra, where she spent much of her life.

Savitribai Phule was born on January 3, 1831, in Naigaon, Maharashtra. She is best known for her relentless work in the field of education, especially for advocating for the education of girls and marginalized communities. In a time when women were largely confined to the household and education for girls was considered unnecessary, Savitribai Phule defied social norms and established the first school for girls in Pune in 1848, along with her husband, Jyotirao Phule. This was a radical move at a time when social reform was still a distant dream for most Indians.

Savitribai’s contributions were not confined to just education. She worked tirelessly against the caste-based discrimination that prevailed in society, fighting for the rights and dignity of the lower castes. Her efforts were particularly focused on empowering women and advocating for their rights to education, property, and a dignified life. She also worked towards the abolition of untouchability, often facing severe backlash from conservative sections of society.

Her Punyatithi serves as a reminder of the enormous strides she made in transforming Indian society. It is a day when people reflect on her values and ideals—equality, education for all, the abolition of caste discrimination, and women’s empowerment. In schools, especially those that carry forward her educational ideals, teachers and students organize programs to celebrate her contributions. Various organizations hold rallies and discussions to highlight the significance of her work and to inspire others to continue her legacy of social justice.

Savitribai Phule’s death anniversary is not just a commemoration of her life but also an opportunity to revisit and continue the fight for equality and justice in contemporary society. It’s a day to reaffirm the importance of education and the ongoing struggle to uplift marginalized communities, especially women and the oppressed
