Legend Behind Onam

  • According to mythology, King Mahabali was a generous and powerful ruler.
  • The gods, fearing his growing influence, sought help from Lord Vishnu.
  • Vishnu took the form of Vamana (a dwarf Brahmin) and asked for three steps of land.
  • With the first two steps, he covered the earth and sky, leaving no space.
  • King Mahabali, true to his word, offered his own head for the third step.
  • As a blessing, Vishnu granted him permission to visit his people once a year – this visit is celebrated as Onam.

When is Onam Celebrated?

  • Onam is based on the Malayalam calendar and falls on the Thiruvonam Nakshatra (star) in Chingam month.
  • In 2024, Onam will be celebrated from September 5 to September 17, with Thiruvonam on September 15.
