Golden Temple also known as Harmandir Sahib, is a gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab India.
The Golden Temple is the preeminent spiritual site of Sikhism.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire rebuilt Golden Temple in marble and copper in 1809.

History
Sikh historical records say the land that became Amritsar and houses.
Harmandir Sahib was chosen by Guru Amar Das, the third Guru of the Sikh tradition.
It was then called Guru Da Chakk after he had asked his disciple Ram Das to find land to start a new town with a man-made pool as its central point.
After Guru Ram Das succeeded Guru Amar Das in 1574 and in the face of hostile opposition from the sons of Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das founded the town that came to be known as Ramdaspur.
Started by completing the pool with the help of Baba Buddha ( not to be confused with the Buddha of Buddhism.)
Guru Ram built his new official center and home next to it.
He invited merchants and artisans from other parts of India to settle in the new town with him.
A Golden Temple is spiritually the most significant shrine in Sikhism.
It became a center of the Singh Sabha Movement between 1883 and 1920s thus the Punjabi Suba movement between 1947 and 1966.
During the early 1980s, the Gurudwara became a contre of conflict between the Indian government and a movement led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
In 1984, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi sent in the Indian Army as part of Operation Blue star.
Leading to the deaths of over 1,000 soldiers and civilians, causing much damage to the Gurdwara and the destruction of Akal Takht.
Golden Temple, the gurudwara complex was rebuilt again after the 1984 damage.
Golden temple is the holiest religious site of the Sikh community.
A most famous and attractive aspect of the Golden temple is its glittering golden dome and appearance.
Things to remember in Golden Temple Amritsar
- All visitors must remove their shoes and wash their feet by walking through pools before entering the temple as there is a cloakroom in the Golden Temple for shoes.
- On arrival at Golden Temple, both men and women are required to wear a scarf over their heads.
- Inside the Golden Temple Chewing gum, sunglasses, and photography are prohibited.
- It is strictly prohibited to serve or eat any eatables in the parikrama.
- Karah Prasad should be distributed only after one exit from the Sanctum Sanctum.
- Devotees should not pay any money to sewadars on duty.
