Another name of this 4.8 km monument is Mankal. The Raja of Warangal built the Golconda Fort in 1143 using mud and stones. It served as the capital of Qutub kings. A shepherd boy discovered an idol on the rocky hill where the fort stands, and he reported the discovery to the ruling Kakatiya king of that time.The king constructed a mud fort around this holy spot and after 200 years thus this fort got shepherd’s name I.e Golla konda in telugu. Afterwards bahamani took over the fort and later by Qutub shahi. Qutub king’s reign ended in 1687 and Aurangzeb captured the fort.
