About SATKOSIA TIGER RESERVE
The forests surrounding the Satkosia Ghats of the Mahanadi are a mosaic of richly diverse habitats and a landscape with fascinating flora and fauna along the
riverbeds flowing through the gorge and were notified as the Satkosia Ghats Sanctuary in May, 1976.
The southern part of this sanctuary in Nayagarh district was notified as Baisipali Sanctuary in 1981.
Together, these two sanctuaries cover an area of 963.87 sq. km.
It has been notified as Satkosia Tiger Reserve vide Notification No. 8F(S)-32/20807/F&E dated 31 December 2007, Bhubaneswar.
It has a core area of 523.61 sq km and a buffer area of 440.26 km. .
The geographical coordinates of the boundary points of the tiger reserve are 20 23′ 40″ N and 20 45′ 36″ N latitude and 84º 32′ 35″ E and 85º 05′ 24″ E longitude.
Gadjat Hills subdivisions 6B and 6C under Lahnnagpur Plateau Biotic Province Eastern Ghats Biotic Province 6 – Deccan Peninsula Biogeographic Region.
Literally, the Satkosia Tiger Reserve represents the endemic fauna of both bioregions in the transitional zone.
After change in boundary of Satkosia Ghat Sanctuary and change of forest area, the area of Satkosia Tiger Reserve is notified as No.8F(WL)15/2018-26865 dated 1136.70 sq km. 14/12/18.
The area of the reserve is 1136.70 sq km with a core area of 523.61 sq km. The area is also a part of the Mahanadi Elephant Sanctuary.
Satkosia is the junction of two biogeographical regions of India;
The Deccan Peninsula and the Eastern Ghats contribute enormously to biodiversity.
Some important things to do while visiting Satkosia Tiger Reserve
Visitors must give an undertaking before entering the tiger reserve that they will abide by the applicable rules and regulations.
Violation of these rules and regulations will result in severe punishment.
Entry of tourist vehicles is allowed only at Pampasar, Kusang and Chamundia gates.
Vehicles or visitors along with their belongings may be checked by forest staff for all entry and exit.
Any vehicle violating the prescribed rules and regulations for another incident will be barred from entering the reserve further.
All visitors should vacate Tikarpada premises by 5:00 PM. All tourists visiting the reserve for a day should exit the reserve gate by 6:00 pm on the same day.
Camps at Tikarpada, Chotkei, Purunakot and Tarwa will allow only visitors with confirmed reservations to stay in the reserve.
Only a limited number of vehicles are allowed to enter the
reserve each day at Pampasar (24), Chmundia (10) and Kusang (6).
Visitors may be allowed to stay at Kuanria and Chmundia, subject to definite reservation sought from the Divisional Forest Officer, Mahanadi Wildlife Division, Nayagarh.
