Shivneri fort in Pune

     The Shivneri fort in Pune present-time Junnar was known as Jirna-nagar, Junner prior to the commencement of the year AD. Junnar was the capital of the Shak dynasty of King Nahapan. Satkarni, a son of Gautami, the Satvahan monarch, wiped out Shakas and ruled over Junnar and the surrounding area.

After entering Junnar town, take this road till you reach the Shivaji Maharaj statue in front of the new bus stand. The path to the left of this square leads to a temple about a km away. A well-worn path in front of the temple leads to the sheer cliff of Shivneri fort in Pune.

The fort must be climbed using iron chain and steps cut out of the steep vertical rock. This path is a little challenging and takes around 3/4 hour to complete.

How to Get to Junnar:

After passing over Malshej Ghat on the Kalyan-Nagar route, there is a road sign after 8 or 9 km saying that Shivneri fort in Pune is 19 kilometres distant. This route connects Shivneri Fort to Ganesh Khind (pass). It takes one day to get to the fort.
