About Lal Mahal in Pune
Lal Mahal, also known as the Red Palace of Pune, is one of Pune's most iconic monuments. It was built in 1630 AD by the father of the present-day chandrapati, Shri. Shahaji bhosale, for his wife and son. The Lal Mahal remained in the possession of the chandrapati for several years, until the first fort was captured by the Maharajah of Pune. After that, the old Lal Mahal went into ruins, and the present-day Lal Mahal stands as a replica of the original, situated in the heart of the city of Pune.
Lal Mahal is well-known for being the site of an encounter between the Maharajah and Shaista khan, in which Shaista Khan cut off the Maharajah's fingers when he tried to escape through the window.
