The first prime minister of Papua New Guinea, Michael Somare has passed away. He was known as the “father of the nation” because he led the Pacific archipelago to independence from Australia in 1975.

6.China Surpasses the US to become India’s top trade partner in 2020.

China has regained its position as the top trading partner of India in 2020, which was held by the United States, since 2018-19. The two-way trade between India and China stood at $77.7 billion in 2020 despite the conflict along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the rising anti-China sentiment.

7.United States officially re-joins Paris Climate Agreement.

The United States has officially rejoined the Paris Agreement, under the Presidency of US President Joe Biden. Earlier, in November 2020, the US had officially exited the agreement on the order of then-President Donald Trump.

8.Dr. Harsh Vardhan launches Mission Indradhanush 3.0.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan has launched the Intensified Mission Indradhanush 3.0, (IMI 3.0), to expand immunization coverage across the country.

9.Karnataka to Host 2nd Khelo India University Games 2021.

The second edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2021, is scheduled to be held in Karnataka. This announcement was made by the Karnataka Chief Minister, Shri BS Yediyurappa, and Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju.

10.World’s biggest cricket stadium set for the first match.

President Ram Nath Kovind has inaugurated the newly revamped Motera cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, which has been renamed the Narendra Modi Stadium. The biggest cricket stadium in the world will hold its first international match, with the newly renovated Sardar Patel Stadium to host the third Test between India and England. Both India and England had a forgettable outing in their last pink-ball outings. 

11.Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka win Australian Open 2021.

In tennis, Japan’s Naomi Osaka won her fourth Grand Slam title on February 20, 2021, after she beat American Jennifer Brady in the women’s singles game of the Australian Open final 2021.

1.India hosts the First Meeting of BRICS Finance and Central Bank Deputies under its 2021 Chairship.

On February 24, 2021, India hosted the meeting of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) finance and central bank deputies. Notably, it was the first meeting on the BRICS Financial Cooperation under India Chairship in 2021.

2.MCA & CBIC Signed MoU for Exchange of Data to Enhance Ease of Doing Business in India.

On 25th February 2021, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs(MCA) and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) for data exchange between the two organizations.

3.SEBI to introduce Pre-Expiry Margins to Curb Negative Price Scenarios.

In order to strengthen the risk management framework, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) will introduce pre-expiry margins on cash-settled contracts with effect from April 1, 2021.  Under this underlying commodities are deemed to be susceptible to possible near zero or negative prices.

4.ICICI Bank in Partnership with GCC and CSCL Launched ‘Namma Chennai Smart Card’.

On February 23, 2021, ICICI Bank in partnership with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Chennai Smart City Limited (CSCL) launched  ‘Namma Chennai Smart Card’, a Common Payment Card System (CPCS). The Rupay-powered co-branded, contactless prepaid card was unveiled by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister(CM) Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

5.Social Alpha and SIDBI Partnered to Set up 1st of its Kind Swavalamban Divyangjan ATMA Fund.

Social Alpha, a multistage innovation curation and venture development platform has partnered with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to set up the  Swavalamban Divyangjan Assistive Tech Market Access (ATMA) fund,  a Social Impact fund.

7.China’s claims both sides have begun disengagement from Pangong lake in Ladakh.

China’s military announced on February 10, 2021, that front line troops of India and China had begun disengaging from the north and south banks of Pangong Tso (lake) in Ladakh, where both sides have been locked in a stand-off for months. The Indian Army was yet to release a statement on the development.
